Note to self

In my work I choose to let the story embrace the material. This leads me to working with different art forms. It’s like I always want to leave the door open for choosing each time I enter a new project. I am trying to be a free spirit. An esoteric landscape where play meets timelessness and where I use glass to excavate the essence and the story of a place.

Through making I let my roots grow and slowly feel at ease through my work processes. Even though I primarily use glass as a medium I also work with site specific collaborative projects as part of a process with the aim to lead to public installations. I love to sculpt and to be the messenger and have also made scenographic landscapes in glass for the theatre as well as dance choreographers.

Anna-Linda Gabriel b. 1976, Oslo, has worked with glass since 1998 and has her family in Småland, but also family in Italy and the Philippines. With a life on the farm in Gissamåla and a life in her studio at the Glass Museum The Glass Factory in Boda, she has the opportunity to control how much she wants to work on her own projects and how much she wants to dedicate to the soil-bound cultivation.

Right now, Anna-Linda has an exhibition at Galleri Magic Photo, with glass objects and photos taken with the help of Stephanie Verstift/Vildmark Studio that show the objects made with elk bones presented in a kind of photo diorama. The light ornaments in the form of opal white glass sculptures reflect and illuminate the shapes and colors of the homestead association's collections. The project, called I Benkrossens Ljus, is about using cultural heritage, in this case brilliant glass sculptures, to highlight the collections of local associations around grain processing. Bone meal was otherwise used as a soil improver but has also been used to create opal glass.

Anna-Linda has not only worked with other people's collections but also her own collection of objects and what they want to tell her or remind her of. The separate exhibition and project Note to Self, came about during the pandemic and the goal was first to create a film where the glass was used as a scenographic material in a dance film with choreographer and dancer Gabriella Engdahl. The scenographic landscape was later opened to the public and both film and a soundscape were integrated into the exhibition that was shown at The Glass Factory and later in a new edition at Vida Konstmuseum and then with a performative work where Anna-Linda created a costume with glass worn by the dancer.

Anna-Linda also works with blowing and sculpting limited series for others and herself. In that work, she maintains and develops her craft skills and work further with the craft foundation that was created when she moved to Småland in -98.
